William and Kate to Wear Welsh Gold

Is Now the Time to Invest in Welsh Gold? Will Kate and Williams Wedding produce an Increase in Demand?

Welsh gold has been considered ‘that little bit special’ for a long time.  It has been mined in two distinct areas of Wales, one in the North and one in the South in a small area in one of the valleys.

Welsh gold has always been popular because of its scarcity, but with another British Royal wedding it may experience a new resurgence.

The problem with some commodities is that they sometimes seem to get forgotten, then a news item or event brings them back to the forefront and the demand increases.  This demand has an effect of the price.

Prince William and Kate are throwing a lot of the former traditions out of the window, but the Welsh gold wedding rings seems to be one which is going to stay.

There are often trends in wedding ring metals, there was a time when gold was practically the only metal used for wedding rings, then along came the platinum trend.  But now there is quite possibly going to be a resurgence in the tendency towards gold.

However, when a style comes back into fashion there is usually a slight change in the reaction people have to it.  Since Kate will be wearing a Welsh gold wedding ring I would predict that we will start to talk about gold with reference to their qualities rather than their carat.  For example, people will have a preference to Welsh, White or Rose gold rather than whether it is 24 carat or not!

So is gold jewellery the thing to invest in at the moment?  Unfortunately that is not a question I can answer, but I would definitely say that if you have inherited a load of Welsh gold jewellery you are probably sitting on a nice little sum of money.  However, will you get more for it after the latest Royal wedding?  My guess is that jewellery which has a history and a design value as well as being Welsh gold will be sought after.  So if you have an antique ring, designed by or worn by a famous person, it will probably become more collectable and will probably increase in value after the wedding as there will be a greater awareness of the scarcity and associations of Welsh gold.  However, as a short term investment I do not think it is worth buying Welsh gold jewellery now in the hope of cashing in on a rise in the market.
